The reason why is because the game makes them unimportant, giving them extremely minor roles if they appear at all if the player chooses male; Crystal is neither seen nor mentioned in Crystal as Leaf is in FRLG or HGSS, May made a promising start in the beginning of RSE but quit being the rival and was never seen again after the 4th battle, Dawn is left as Prof. Rowan's lowly assistant (among other things >.>), Lyra would just stroll around with her maril, and Hilda and Mei only appear in the subway
So, while the guys are out doing champion stuff, the girls go to Shikoku to make themselves known to the public and do other things too.
